چکیده

UNLABELLED The presence of "tumour budding", ie. single cancer cells, or a nest of poorly- differentiated cells at the front of invasion, in bowel cancer appears to be a new histopathological indicator of increased aggressiveness of colorectal carcinoma. The aim of this work was a retrospective evaluation of the front of invasion in preoperative biopsies of patients with rectal carcinoma (T1) and an analysis of the relationship between tumour budding and metastases or recurrence of the tumour at the site of resection. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study was performed based on material obtained before and during surgical treatment of 34 patients with cancer of the colon. Tissue was obtained directly following tumour resection, fixed in 10% formaldehyde and embedded in paraffin blocks using a routine method by melting with paraffin at a temperature of 56 degrees C. These samples were then routinely stained with haemotoxylin and eosin and underwent a histopathological evaluation, with particular attention being paid to the front of invasion of the tumour. RESULTS Tumour budding (TB) at the front of invasion was found in 12 out of 34 patients. Statistical analysis showed a correlation between TB and the histological type of tumour, the presence of lymph node metastases, distant metastases and recurrence of the tumour in post-operative scars. CONCLUSION The results suggest the usefulness of evaluating TB at the front of invasion as an additional prognostic indicator in rectal carcinoma.

Comparing PET metabolic parameters with clinicopathological factors in predicting onset of early recurrence in recently diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma

Introduction: Early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major risk factor affecting survival even after hepatectomy. Many clinical, biochemical parameters and pathological grading like fibrosis 1 index have been used for risk stratifying HCC. However not many studies have combined all of them. It is therefore important to risk stratify HCC especially with newer PE...

High-Grade Urothelial Carcinoma of Bladder Transforming to Micropapillary Variant on Follow-Up

Micropapillary variant of urothelial carcinoma (UC) of the bladder is an aggressive tumour, comprising 0.6-6% of all UC. It generally presents with high-grade and stage, and has been reported as having a worse prognosis when compared to traditional UC. We report the case of a 58-year-old man who presented with macroscopic haematuria. The patient was diagnosed with high-grade urothelial carcinom...

Tumor Budding and Recurrence in Submucosal Invasive Colorectal Cancers of Favorable Histology: Case Reports of Two Early Colorectal Cancers with Advanced Recurrences

Complete resection of submucosal invasive colorectal cancer (SICC) showing favorable histology is regarded as curative. We report on two cases of SICC showing recurrence within 5 years despite complete resection. The first patient was a 68-year-old woman with well differentiated rectal adenocarcinoma invading the superficial submucosa, which recurred after 4.7 years. The second patient was a 53...

Prognostic molecular markers in hepatocellular carcinoma (Review article

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the 5th commonest malignancy worldwide and is the third most common cause of cancer-related death. The prevalence is different in the world. The ability to predict patients at higher risk of recurrence and with a poor prognosis would help to guide surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment according to individual risk. As understanding of hepatocarcinogenesi...

Correction: Correlations between Integrin ανβ6 Expression and Clinico-Pathological Features in Stage B and Stage C Rectal Cancer

Integrin ανβ6 is highly expressed in a range of human cancers and frequently correlates with patient survival. This study examines correlations between ανβ6 expression and patient clinico-pathological features in Stage B and Stage C rectal cancer, including overall survival. Expression of ανβ6 was measured in 362 Stage B or C rectal cancer tissue samples at the tumour central region, invasive t...
